At our Kayne Eras Center (KEC), ECF operates a nonpublic special education school for students in grades K-12. Here, students ages 5-22 find help developing the social, intellectual, and emotional skills they need to learn at their fullest potential.

KEC accepts referrals from most local school districts and charter schools. Most KEC students have eligibilities including emotional disturbance, autism, intellectual disability, other health impairment and specific learning disability. KEC offers services to address these challenges, including: language, speech, and occupational therapies; individual and group counseling; and additional adult assistance.


The Kayne Eras School is fully accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The ACS WASC is a world-renowned accrediting association and one of the six regional accrediting agencies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. KEC educators and counselors work closely with both students and families to address the issues preventing each student from learning at his or her full potential. Our counseling staff consists of licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, licensed Clinical Social Workers, and post-graduate level Marriage and Family Therapy interns.


KEC offers a general education curriculum for diploma-track and college-bound students as well as an alternate curriculum track for students requiring a modified educational program. All students are offered support in pre-vocational and vocational training, which may be provided on site or off site at internships, volunteer opportunities, or at local community colleges.

KEC high school graduates transition into community and four-year colleges, advance to trade schools or community jobs, or enroll in ECF adult services programs.

Each student is provided a “team” of staff with different skill sets to support their success. A team of teachers, counselors and speech and Language providers or occupational therapists are assigned to specific classrooms to provide one-on-one services and conduct group activities. Educational Therapists are also assigned to specific classrooms to help provide personalized service to students and to help teachers in designing educational interventions tailored to each student’s learning style. This team approach, combined with small class sizes and highly specialized instruction, help students learn how to learn.

Educational therapists provide individualized reading assessments and individual or group remedial reading instruction to select students using the Lexia Reading Program. Title One reading specialists also conduct assessments and provide individual support to students four days a week.

KEC has long been recognized for its excellent enrichment program. Music, dance, and art – all students find an opportunity for success and self-expression. Students in our dance program have earned gold medal recognition in salsa dancing at the Junior Olympics. The school’s competitive intramural sports program is exemplary, and our “Best Buddies” partnership with the Archer School for Girls has been transformative for students at both schools.

All students are afforded the opportunity to participate in prevocational or vocational training both on and off-site. Students with cognitive challenges benefit from experiencing success in vocational training and participation in off-site opportunities, including community college courses (for students over the age of 16). Diploma track and college-bound students benefit from enhanced resumes as well as the ability to take community college courses at no cost.

KEC provides authentic learning experiences through integrated cross-curriculum themes, spanning all grade and ability levels. Our current theme is contemporary and relevant — “Man’s Affect on the Environment, and the Environment’s Affect Upon Man” – and is addressed in English, Math, Social Science, Science, the Arts, and Physical Education classes.
